Dimming Boards for Display Backlighting

Backlight control boards for industrial displays, featuring flicker-free control and a very high brightness control range.

The backlighting of a display is achieved using high-efficiency and high-brightness LED bars. LEDs require current driving, and therefore, innovative circuits ("LED drivers") are special DC-DC converters that allow for the control of the brightness of the LED bars through pulse-width modulation (PWM) of the current.

The brightness control boards are essentially LED drivers optimized to power the backlight LEDs of LCD displays. These boards provide flicker-free control, eliminating the flickering that can strain the eyes and compromise image quality when brightness is reduced.

Thanks to a granular brightness control range, it is possible to achieve very high brightness levels when needed and very low levels when necessary, referred to as "extended dimming range."

Our designs allow for a dimming ratio of up to 1:4000 between minimum and maximum brightness.

This means that a display with 2000 nits can be dimmed down to 0.5 nits.

While this may seem unnecessary, it is crucial for managing the backlight of our displays used on marine panels, where during nighttime use, it is essential to have the display on with very low brightness.

In industrial applications, these boards ensure long-term durability, even at high temperatures.

Our dimmer boards are "smart," meaning they have an onboard microcontroller that makes them remotely controllable via serial line (Modbus) or through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth (via an optional smartphone app).

It is possible to control multiple boards connected to the same control line, as each board can have a selectable address within the network of connected boards.

CJB can design dimmer boards tailored to the application requirements for size, programmability, remote control, and interface to the displays (backlight current).
